An image from a paper written by Fluent's Sriswetha Modem, a sales engineer for the HVAC industry from the Lebanon office, and Professor Sean Garrick of the University of Minnesota received the "Visualization Society of Japan Silicon Graphics Inc. Award for Excellent Visualized Image in 2004." The paper, "Nanoparticle Coagulation in Temporal Mixing Layers: Mean and Size-selected Images," appeared in 2003 in the Journal of Visualization. Direct numerical calculations were performed to simulate nanoparticle growth in a mixing layer. The flow consists of the mixing of two streams with the lower stream containing 1nm particles initially and the upper stream particle free. The spatio-temporal evolution of the particulate field is visualized here via contours of 5nm-diameter particle concentration in order to illustrate the effects of fluid-turbulence on nanoparticle growth.
